BASF’s Aroma Ingredients division has launched its first reduced Product Carbon Footprint (rPCF) aroma chemical—L-Menthol FCC rPCF—cutting cradle-to-gate emissions by 10 – 15 % versus the conventional grade. Consumer-goods giant Colgate-Palmolive is among the inaugural customers, viewing the switch as a tangible step toward its 2040 net-zero pledge.

How the rPCF Concept Works

BASF applies a mass-balance approach at its integrated Verbund sites, substituting a certified share of fossil feedstocks or utilities with lower-PCF alternatives. The resulting carbon reduction is attributed to finished rPCF batches while all physical and sensory properties remain unchanged—meaning customers can transition without requalifying formulas.

Colgate-Palmolive Partnership

Lauren Richardson, Chief Procurement Officer, Colgate-Palmolive:
“Shifting menthol sourcing to a lower-carbon option demonstrates effective collaboration with BASF and moves us meaningfully toward net-zero while preserving top product quality.”

Raw materials and packaging represent the bulk of Colgate’s emissions. Converting high-volume ingredients like menthol is therefore critical to the company’s carbon-reduction roadmap.

Roadmap: More rPCF Molecules Coming

BASF says rPCF citronellol and geraniol will follow in 2025, prioritizing “large-tonnage workhorses” to maximise Scope 3 impact for customers in home and personal-care categories.

Steffen Götz, VP Aroma Ingredients, BASF:
“Adding rPCF grades marks a milestone in our sustainability strategy and makes us the first aroma-chem supplier enabling downstream CO₂ abatement at scale.”

Industry Significance

  • Scope 3 Pressure – Brands confront mounting regulatory and investor scrutiny over supply-chain emissions.
  • Plug-and-Play Solution – Mass-balance allows instant carbon cuts without costly reformulation.
  • Scaling Potential – BASF plans to expand the rPCF portfolio based on customer demand, signaling a broader shift toward low-carbon feedstocks across the fragrance value chain.
